Chapter 22

Violet’s smile lights up the whole room. I’ve been watching her during dinner and she seems genuinely happy and relaxed. For the third night in a row ,we have all enjoyed a meal together without any mishaps. No one has been stabbed or punched or ended up in tears. I’d say that’s some pretty major progress. There is a new easiness about the house, a sense of cohesion. If only I could be as relaxed as the rest of them.

I want to talk to Violet desperately. I want to open up and tell her things but I don’t know if I can. Over the past few days, everything on the list that she asked for has been put into motion, except for the therapy sessions. I should be the one to go first and lead by example but the thought of it fills me with fear. What if I can’t control myself?

Contemplating these things while I chew, I watch the rest of them in contented silence. Jasper is teaching Violet more sign language. I’m impressed with how quickly she’s picking it up.

“Show her how to say dickhead, Jas,” Cole laughs. “She’ll probably need to use that one a lot.”

They all fall about laughing as Jasper demonstrates. Even Spencer is starting to get more involved, slowly. He keeps his distance of course, but the ear plugs have made all the difference. Or maybe it’s just Violet. Spencer could have gotten ear plugs any time he liked, but he didn't have a reason to want to until Violet showed up.

After a while, Violet gets up and comes over to sit in the chair beside me. The air stirs with her perfume and her arm brushes against mine momentarily as she takes a seat. The brief contact is all it takes to ignite the fire inside me. My yearning for her is almost painful, like a hunger I’ll never be able to satisfy. The knowledge that I’ll never be able to have her only makes her all the more tempting.

“You’re quiet tonight, boss. Everything ok?” Violet is genuinely concerned. She doesn’t do bullshit, so if she acts concerned, it’s because she is.

She seems to have adopted the boys’ nickname for me which does not help my internal struggle. Every time the word boss falls from her lips, I have the urge to bend her over and show her just how bossy I can be.

“Everything’s fine, Violet, thank you.” I hesitate, unsure whether I’m ready to say what I want to say next. “I do have something to show you.”

Violet smiles at me with keen interest. “Ok, now?”

“Why not?” I reply, deciding to take the plunge. “Now’s as good a time as any.”

Violet follows me through the house to a room at the bottom of the stairs that lead to my floor. It’s only ever been used for storage until now.

I pull my bunch of keys from my pocket and unlock the door for her. Violet bounces on the spot like a child.

“Close your eyes.
